News of the Week

Desk of the Band Diector

Student and parents, this is the week that we have all been looking forward to and putting in so much work, time and effort.  This weekend, October 15th, we will perform our festival show at Tarpon Springs Music Festival.  This week we will continue tweaking and working our show for perfection.  Unfortunately, there are many other activities that will distract from our preparation. Our underclassmen will have FCAT Paper Bases Reading and CBT testing. We have a Rehearse A Thon fundraiser scheduled and we’re asking each student to contribute/raise $10.  We will perform at the JV football game on Thursday evening.  Call time is 5:00 pm and the game starts at 6:00 pm.  We will have a rehearsal afterschool on Friday from 3:00 until 5:15 pm.  We have a Pasta Dinner from 5:30-6:15 pm at a cost of $7/person.  We encourage all students and their families to join us.   At 6:30 pm, a presentation will be made to parents and friends who contributed to the Rehearse A Thon fundraiser.  All students are required to attend and participate.

We’re at a point in the season where the student commitment has to prevail.  It really doesn’t matter how much you or I want to be successful.  If the students are consistently missing rehearsals, not willing to make adjustments in their schedules to accommodate extra practice, there’s not much we can do as staff.  The extra elements to bring our show to life is coming along very well thanks to the parents and friends who came out last Saturday to help build props.

The festival this weekend will be a benchmark to determine whether or not we should attend state competition in November.  I personally feel if our score is not in line with the scores of other bands in our class by the October 30th festival, we need to seriously consider not participating at the state level this year.  Financially, it will not be in our best interest if our scores are not where they should be. Please note, I’m very excited about this weekend and I’m looking forward to putting our product on the field and performing to an audience that appreciates good band performances.  Our call time will be 12:30 pm on Saturday to clean instruments; roll call is at 1:00 pm and we will depart at 2:00 pm.  Our return time is expected to be 12:30 am.  A complete agenda for Saturday will be forthcoming.

 P.S

Some of our students have asked for waivers and extensions to pay their lab fees.  Many of these students have still not fulfilled their agreement.  We cannot continue to spend money that we do not have.
